7 Ways to Get Involved in College Fitness

By January 14, 2016Live
  1. Use your college ID for discounts at fitness institutions.

Get ripped, not ripped off! Many gyms such as Gold’s Gym and 24 Hour Fitness offer student discounted memberships if you flash them your college ID.

It’s a solid way to save some money, have better access to sleek and fancy exercise equipment, and meet new people!

Also: Eastern Mountain Sports offers student discounts, too, on in-store purchases. They sell outdoor gear and clothing, so this could be useful if you’re the adventurous type.

  1. Go to your college gym!

To save even more money, try out your campus fitness center. Most colleges include a pass to your campus gym as a part of your tuition. Since you’re already paying for it, why not give it a shot?

If you haven’t been to your gym yet, or are intimidated by it in some way: what are you waiting for?? Everyone has to start somewhere – in fact, I didn’t start going to my college’s gym until after my freshman year! Depending on your college, your gym may even have access to a full-sized pool or rock-climbing wall.

Pro Tip: College students have weird schedules. There probably won’t be a golden time to go work out at the gym for every student, so try going to the gym at different times and figure out what time works best for you!

Many colleges frequently offer free fitness events. Make sure to update yourself on your college gym’s websites for any Zumba, yoga, or spin classes that might be available!

  1. Try an intramural/club sport.

Now that it’s a new semester, it’s prime time to sign up for intramurals. Many schools offer an outstanding number of sports such as flag football, basketball, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball, and volleyball for you and your friends to play.

The best part about intramural sports is that they’re low-pressure. So what are you waiting for? Grab a few buddies and sign up!

  1. Take a physical education class for credit and get an easy A.

Many colleges have a flat tuition rate based on a set number of credits, so if your core classes leave you a few credits short, take a 1-credit fitness class. You can use these to hone your skills in archery, condition your body, relax in yoga, or learn to cook! It’s a great way to add to your college credits and boost your GPA.

Just look at those star students, studying hard.

  1. Do some fun dorm workouts.

Now that winter is here, I totally understanding not wanting to leave your oh-so-cozy home. But that’s no excuse not to work out. (There is never an excuse not to work out. Unless a new episode of Grey’s Anatomy is out…you know what I mean.) Set aside a space in your room, place a mat down, pick up a few weights, and get started!

  1. Don’t forget about your mental health!

Mental health is JUST as important as physical health. Most, if not all schools offer behavioral health and medicine/counseling services that are confidential. So if you are ever feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed, remember there is always someone out there willing to help.

Joining your school’s Fit University chapter is easy…all you need to do is show up to a workout or event. Don’t have a Fit University chapter at school?
