What You Might Not Know About That Pumpkin Spiced Latte

Since 2003, Starbucks has been bringing out the inner basic white girl in all of us with their Pumpkin Spiced Latte “PSL”. Though it is quite yummy with its sweet, cinnamon flavor of fall that we all love, the nutritional facts are a little shocking.

Nutritional facts can be found straight from the Starbucks website.

Thankfully, there are a few healthier options that knock out the excess fats and sugars but still taste just as good.

The first one is from Stupid Easy Paleo (a personal favorite foodie blog). It is dairy-free and doesn’t have any of that awful artificial flavoring (score!).

Paleo Pumpkin Spiced Latte

Time: 5 minutes

When to eat it: Anytime you want a caffeine boost

Perks: Dairy-free, all the deliciousness of a PSL without the fluff

Sh*t You Need:

2 oz freshly brewed espresso
1/4 cup full fat coconut milk
1-2 tbsp canned, pureed pumpkin, optional
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground ginger
splash of maple syrup or honey, optional
splash of pure vanilla

The Recipe

1. Brew your espresso. If you don't have any espresso machine, you can still make the PSL - make some dark french roast coffee. I do this with a French press.

2. Froth the coconut milk using the steamer on your espresso machine. Again...no machine? Heat the milk on the stovetop. It just won't be foamy or give the same consistency but will still taste amazing. Heavy cream also works well here.

3. In a small container, combine the cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Shake to combine. You will only be using about ⅛ tsp per cup, so save the rest.

4. Combine espresso, steamed coconut milk, 1-2 tablespoons of pumpkin, vanilla extract and ⅛ teaspoon of spice mix. Add splash of maple syrup or honey if you prefer. Stir to combine.

5. Top with foam and sprinkle with a pinch of spice.   

No time? 

The second option when you’re craving a PSL is to hit up Starbucks, because sometimes that is the only coffee shop around. Go ahead with the Grande (the tall is too small anyways right?!) but maybe try ordering your PSL with almond milk and no whipped cream. This alone makes a significant nutritional difference!

This is the time of year when the weather is feeling just right and we finally get to bring out our fall and winter clothes. Its sometimes hard to get motivated to still be active and healthy. But with options like a healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte, we don’t have to give up everything that is wonderful about this season. Happy Fall!
